Ted Kosmatka. The One Who Isn’t. (Lightspeed Magazine #74, July 2016)

Online here.

A young boy, and a woman, in a featureless room. Neither has a name, the boy has no memory, her visits are his entire world. She tells him stories, including one about a Queen who, fearing that her husband will bring up their son in his own evil image, secretes him away out of the king’s reach, only to suffer a terrible consequence(s) that go on and on, until….

What does this story presage for the boy in the room, and the woman?

An intriguing vignette, feeling like a fantasy story to start, until the sfnal elements come in.
