Richard W. Strachan. After His Kind. (Interzone #259, Jul-Aug 2015)

interzone259The protagonist is the sole (unnamed) survivor of a spaceship which has crashed from orbit onto the surface of an otherwise uninhabited planet. He has lost his right arm in the crash.

His area of expertise on the ship was the study of planarians, a species of flatworm which have the ability to regenerate lost body parts, or, indeed to regenerate as two separate individuals. And he finds that the planet on which he has crashed is extraordinarily fecund – and you would give your right arm in order to avoid a lifetime alone on a planet wouldn’t you?

And interesting idea from Strachan.
