A neat story from McAuley who takes a look at an AI which is in a spaceship orbiting a distant planet. There are hominids on the planet, which the AI is monitoring.
The AI is the narrator, and as the story develops we find that it is in fact hiding a lot from the reader/itself, and it takes a surprise arrival to clarify exactly what has happened, Dave.
And the surprise arrival himself arranges for assistance to the hominids (he is the fixer of the title), in the shape of a very sfnal device.
