Nina Allan. Marielena. (Interzone #254, Sep-Oct 2014)

interzone254Now writing a column for Interzone, Allan’s latest story for them stops just as it’s getting interesting, so I’m hoping there’s at least one more followup story!

It’s a fairly bleak look at the UK today, with an asylum seeker having left a lot behind (including the titular Marielena), who is in limbo waiting for permission from the Border Agency to seek employment. Marielena’s voice is constantly in his ear, until he meets a homeless woman pushing her belongings around in a shopping trolley. The contents of the trolley….
