Marissa Lingen. Some of Them Closer. (The Year’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2012)

Originally in : Analog, January 2011.

My oh my, a story from Analog appearing in a Year’s Best, something about as rare as hen’s tooth. This is largely on account of the stories being generally some way off the standard necessary to be labelled ‘best’. However, this is indeed worthy of the epithet. It’s a subtle story of the ennui of a returned terraformer to her native Quebec, who finds the city of her youth subtly changed, and struggles to find a meaning to her new life.

No scientists, no scientific credentials after the author’s name, an altogether non-Analog kind of story.
