An author new to me, and it’s a powerful story featuring two powerful female characters. One is a doctor, exiled to a grim Earth, who is frightened when an assassin turns up demanding she carries out the ritual scarification she needs to mark her most recent kill – that of her partner. The story is intense – simply a conversation between the two, as stories are related, until the final denouement – not unexpected, but still powerful.
