Sean Williams. All the Wrong Places. (Meeting Infinity, 2015)

meeting infinityFollowing an Earth-based story where humans can step into a new body, Williams goes bigger picture, in a future where matter transportation enables humans to reach for the stars.

A young man regrets losing his girlfriend, and decides to follow her after she D-Mats to the Moon. Then, in a story that has an Alastair Reynolds feel, he continues to seek her, always one step behind as she D-Mats to a further distant destination. Time passes, and as the technology improves, there is an exponential increase in his task, as both his lost love and himself multiply themselves and spread across the galaxy.

The backdrop gets bigger and bigger, until he finds himself a long, long way away from where he started.
