I didn’t read this in it’s original magazine appearance, but in Dozois’ 34th Annual Collection.
A story that grabs you straight away, and keeps you (or at least it did me) reading to the end. The protagonist is a cyborg, and he’s having trouble reaching his destination. It’s near future, and we find out it’s the local private security forces that are the issue, and we learn more about the society in which he lives, and the reason behind his cyborgisation. He finds some temporary refuge on a local farm, but the local good ol’ boy private militia man, himself heavily cyborgised, turns up, and things start to get scary.
A new author to me, and a good story from him.
