Jonathan Carroll. The Loud Table. (Tor.com November 2016)

Online here.

Sweet little story from Carroll, that could be straight from the 1950s, except for the closing references to dementia, the singularity and AIs.

The loud table is the name given to a table in a cafe where a small group of older men meet for a chat and a grouse about the usual things older men grouse about. Things changing being one of them, and failing memory another. One of my pet grouses and an older man is editors giving too much away in the story introduction, which happens in this case.
