Joel Richards. Patagonia. (Asimovs March 2012)
The previous story I read in this issue (Tom Purdom’s ‘Golva’s Ascent’) was far future, on an alien planet, with an alien protagonist. This story in contrast is entirely contemporary, but has a far more alien feel to it.
Set in Patagonia, via Skagen in Denmark, the story imparts a palpable sent of location to both, especially the former, where the crux of the story revolves. It’s a remote place, but the travelling pair find much about themselves and much about each other, and an unsuspected link to the past…
An excellent story.
