I still make the odd trip to jlake.com, hoping that Jay’s got some wisdom to impart posthumously, a la Hari Seldon, or failing wisdom, just some of his vitriol aimed at the gun lobby or Christians or conservatives. But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen, so I’ll have to make do with the pleasure of coming across one of his many, many stories that are as yet unread by me.
This is one such, and it’s online here to read and to listen to.
It’s clearly a Lake story, with an uppity teen protagonist, some non-cis relationships, hi-tech and hardware in space, some dramatic actions, a crusty old character narrating the tale. Nothing ground-breaking, and there’s a slight suggestion that it was a story dashed off that could have benefitted from having been filled out more, but that’s what’s on offer, and I’ll take it.
If you want to read a very good story of his head over to To Raise a Mutiny Betwixt Yourselves, available on this very site. nb there’s an IOU to be called in by the Lake family on account of his letting me put this story on Best SF – if you’re ever here in Essex, England, seek me out…
