Jake Kerr. Penance. (The End is Now)

theendisnowKerr cleverly follows up the first story in his sequence (Wedding Day), leaving the samesex newlyweds who were the main protagonists in that story to their fate, and follows a minor character.

Sam was the civil servant who had to break the news that the couple couldn’t get a ticket off the USA, a lottery for which was being run due an imminent asteroid impact on North America. Here we find him, having got his own ticket, heading out into the ocean, one of a few ticket-holders amongst the cargo. He is struggling with inner demons, and memories of those to whom he broke bad news, as the impact approaches. And happens.
