Kerr cleverly follows up the first story in his sequence (Wedding Day), leaving the samesex newlyweds who were the main protagonists in that story to their fate, and follows a minor character.
Sam was the civil servant who had to break the news that the couple couldn’t get a ticket off the USA, a lottery for which was being run due an imminent asteroid impact on North America. Here we find him, having got his own ticket, heading out into the ocean, one of a few ticket-holders amongst the cargo. He is struggling with inner demons, and memories of those to whom he broke bad news, as the impact approaches. And happens.
