Allora & Calzadilla and Ted Chiang. (Fantasy and Science Fiction, May/June 2016)

fsf160506Chiang was never a prolific writer back in the day, but his stories (at least as far as I can see) are now as rare as hen’s teeth.

This story, as the intro tells us, was written a couple of years back by Chiang as part of a mult-screen video installation by Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. It’s just a few pages long, but it’s a neat little squib of a tale, whose narrator is perplexed as to why humans are so keen on searching for intelligence out in space, when it is (but not for long, as the narrator’s species is about to shuffle off this mortal coil) so close to hand.
