A rare thing from Cowdrey – an SF story.
Truth be told, whilst it is set on another planet, and features the crew of a spaceship, the story doesn’t need to be an SF story, and Cowdrey could have set it in any time period, anywhere on Earth, as it’s focus, as with all his stories, are the characters in the story. The farmboy of the title is a senior crewmember, but not the sharpest knife in the drawer. There are others cleverer than he, and they have hatched a plan. When he finds out about the plan, this simple guy draws on some homespun practices to address the issue.
